Hi all,

I am currently exploring algorithms to estimate sleep-wake states and I am interested to know more details on two columns in the MESA actigraphy dataset: "Awake indicator" and "Interval".

  • The Awake indicator seems to be estimated by an automatic algorithm. If so, do you know what algorithm was used?

  • The Interval seems to be a post-processed version of the Awake indicator. Is it correct? If so, was it manually annotated?

Thank in advance!

Best, Joao

Joao,

Yes, sleep and wake are determined using an automatic algorithm. Here are a couple links with more description:

Yes, REST intervals were manually annotated. Anything that is not REST ends up as ACTIVE, assuming the data are not EXCLUDED. The MESA actigraphy scoring manual describes the process used by the actigraphy reviewer.

Hope that helps!

Mike
