My question is, whether the annotation files accompanying each edf have been checked or validated by the data providers, or are they simply automated outputs from the devices themselves? Are there anywhere to find this out?
Thanks for your interest in the site. The dataset documentation typically describes how the annotations were produced (e.g., from manual or automated sleep staging). Most PSG/HSAT data on the site were scored by Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGTs).
